ORIGIN

Modular Light Fixture
Location: Fort Erie, ON

Manufacturer: Barbican Architectural Products

THE BRIEF

Utilizing Barbican’s manufacturing methods, design a light fixture that is cost-effective, versatile, and fits within the modern-day commercial and corporate environments.

MOODBOARD

Primitive shapes, colour gradients, and lighting effects from lunar eclipses inspired the design of the Origin fixture.

EXPLORATION

Three different forms were explored for the shade by having it wrap around a centered and linear light source that could hang by two points to maintain its balance.

Multiple CAD iterations were utilized to find the best way to achieve the desired lighting effect. Digital rendering and IES photometric testing allowed the designers to predict the fixture’s light output and analyze how the light would behave within the circular shade enclosure.

PROTOTYPE 1

The final design was prototyped and tested through every step from production to installation. White and black painted aluminum make up the metal housing, and wet laminated PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified) is used for the shade enclosure.

The design allows the fixture to be assembled and packaged in a low-profile box that can be comfortably carried through doors by two persons. Installation follows a plug & play method that is fast and requires simple steps.

The information gathered from this prototype was analyzed and influenced the design of the second prototype.

PROTOTYPE 2

This version was produced with RGB lighting options and no downlight, as a decorative version.
